Growing a Money Tree

I got a money tree as a gift and at first I wasn’t giving it the love and attention it deserved. It stayed small because I didn’t understand how to take care of it. Over time, I would add some water and make sure it was getting plenty of sunlight. One day, I made it my mission to research how to best take care of my money tree, so it could thrive. I googled, how to grow a money tree? I got some suggestions that I was able to implement right away. Don’t put too much water, make sure it has sunlight, and re-pot once it gets bigger. Now, every week I take time to clean the leaves, water it just right, and make sure it is cared for. Since I started this journey on learning how not to kill plants (lol), I noticed that when we give attention to our money, it grows. Why? Because what you focus on gets your attention and interest which makes it have a better chance at thriving. 

It was easy to neglect my money tree at first. I would walk by and not pay attention. I completely ignore it’s needs and I can see how this is very much how most people handle money in their lives. I even fell into this trap myself. I am drawing a parallel to how money should be handled vs what we do in our everyday lives. Most entrepreneurs and business owners I know do the same regarding their numbers. They are afraid to look at them and most of the time they ignore it all together until it gets out of hand. Just like my money tree, if I ignored it too long, there would be irreversible damage and eventually my plant would die. Instead, I decided to focus on it and ensure it had all the care and love needed to grow. 

At first it grew slowly, and now it is huge. I use my plant as a reminder that it is important to handle money with care and not neglect our finances. For my business finances, I review them twice a month to ensure we are on track and I know the results we had the previous month as I plan for the next 3 months. It gives me the chance to course correct and more actively manage my finances before any surprises happen. I know the numbers give me insights that help me make decisions and allow me to adjust as necessary to hit our company financial goals. 

Since my business generates profit, I am able to invest, save, and pay myself consistently which positively impacts my personal finances. I know how much I can afford to allocate because I am in tune with my numbers. And because I do this work, I am able to also see my wealth and assets grow outside my business. This is what I want every business owner to know. The power of watering and taking care of your money plant can pay huge dividends if you are willing to pay attention. 

Finances can be scary and you often feel judged by your past decisions. You might be in debt with no end in sight and a business that is not as profitable. It does take time and effort to grow a money tree, but with the right systems and dedication, you can also develop your money tree to grow bigger.
